Mechanical Estimator | Up to £58,000 + car allowance + bonus + excellent benefits package | East Midlands
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mechanical Estimator to join an estimating team based in Lincolnshire. This role will be responsible for producing accurate, commercially competitive, and technically robust cost estimates for a variety of mechanical building services projects.
Working closely with internal technical, commercial, and project delivery teams, the successful candidate will take ownership of tenders from initial enquiry through to submission and project handover. This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanically biased estimator seeking long-term career progression within a successful and expanding business.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Tendering
• Prepare accurate mechanical estimates for medium to large-scale projects.
• Review tender documentation including drawings, specifications, schedules, and employer requirements.
• Complete detailed mechanical take-offs and measurements.
• Produce labour, material, plant, and subcontractor cost allowances.
• Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
• Develop comprehensive pricing schedules and tender submissions.
• Identify omissions, inconsistencies, and risks within tender documentation.
• Prepare technical and commercial tender clarifications.
• Ensure all submissions are completed accurately and within required deadlines.
Technical Assessment
• Interpret mechanical design information and specifications.
• Review HVAC, ventilation, heating, plumbing, public health, and associated mechanical systems.
• Identify technical risks and design development requirements.
• Propose practical and commercially viable alternative solutions where appropriate.
• Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, legislation, and project requirements.
Commercial Management
• Assess project risks, opportunities, and key commercial assumptions.
• Review programme requirements, phasing, testing, commissioning, and access considerations.
• Consider procurement lead times, market conditions, and inflation impacts.
• Evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals for technical and commercial suitability.
• Support value engineering initiatives and cost-saving opportunities.
Tender Handover
• Prepare detailed handover documentation following successful bids.
• Clearly communicate assumptions, exclusions, qualifications, and identified risks.
• Support project teams with clarification of estimate build-ups and cost allowances.
• Participate in post-tender reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Requirements
• Minimum 5 years' experience within the construction or building services industry.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical building services systems.
• Experience estimating HVAC, heating, ventilation, plumbing, and public health installations.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and schedules.
• Excellent measurement and take-off skills.
• Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
• Full UK Driving Licence.
• Ability to manage multiple tender submissions and meet deadlines.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable Requirements
• Previous experience working within the Defence sector.
• Broader understanding of electrical services and general construction activities.
• Experience using estimating software such as Amtech or Trimble.
• Knowledge of testing, commissioning, and project handover processes.
